Re: Need Advice On Using A Panasonic AGDVX100B - 17 years agoHi DH, just a couple more quick notes from a DVXB user. Since you'll just be using this camera for the first time I suggest you get familiar with the control layouts and buttons as quickly as you can; you don't want the couple's big moments ruined while you hunt for the autofocus button or the timecode settings... 1. Transitions need a little extra footage on the end of the clip to work with, called handles. You need to set IN and OUT points for your clips so that they're shorter, then the dissolve has footage to work with. On clip 1, the outgoing clip before the dissolve, shorten it from the end by half a second (15 frames). Then on clip 2, the incoming clip aftby John K - Café LA DV to BetaSP: export 8-bit QT or Print to DV tape? - 17 years agoI'm helping a director prep his documentary for an overseas film festival; they require a PAL BetaSP tape for screening. His project was shot in DV NTSC, lots of title cards and lower thirds. We did a test conversion with Nattress, looks like it will turn out pretty good. The main thing now is to figure out the best way to get it transferred to the Beta. What do you think is going on with the converter?by John K - Café LA Re: Frame rate converter error - 17 years agoYup, did that already. It's just not converting the clips into slow motion; they're the same length and speed even though the timebase is changed.by John K - Café LA Re: Frame rate converter error -- Shane? - 17 years agoKoz, let me clarify: Everything is drop-frame. 720p60 uses a 59.94 time base, trying to go 720p24 which is 23.98. This is the technique for getting slow-motion clips out of HVX200 footage; you shoot at 720p60 and convert it to 720p24 using the frame rate converter tool. So I tried it again and while I keep getting this error it DOES create the new clip at 23.98, it just doesn't import it. Bby John K - Café LA Frame rate converter error - 17 years agoI'm trying to convert some 720p60 clips to 23.98 for slow-motion effects. I open the clip in a new project, click the frame rate converter tool and try to export it out as a new 23.98 clip. It gets all the way through saving the clip and then gives me this error: "An error occured during processing. Unable to conform source media." It was all the rage when DV cameras first exploded and filmmakers liked the look (and convenience) over 60i footage. But now that we have cameras that can shoot 24p, does it matter? Will the same, well-lit scene look any different if shot on a DVX100 vs. a DVX100E (PAL)? Yowza. Well I probably should not have said "reference", simply another external monitor. It's 4:2:0 vs. 3:1:1 for Beta SP, right? In any case, I need to double-check the specs as they may have really asked for an old Beta tape, not an SP. So it's DV for sure then. QuoteHow will you be doing the NTSC-PAL conversion? That's a good question... I was going to try a few options. One would be using Compressor for both the downconvert and format conversion in 1 or 2 steps. Or maybe downconvert to NTSC 8-bit first and then use Nattress to conver to PAL. What would you recommend? It's not sync sound BTW, so I can always go back afterby John K - Café LA Color correct final SD output, not the HD master? - 17 years agoJust double-checking: I'm cutting a TV spot that was shot DVCProHD 720p24. It's going to be broadcast on satellite and the final delivery can be either PAL mini-DV or PAL Betacam. I'll want to color-correct the spot AFTER I downconvert, yes? JKby John K - Café LA Re: HDV, or Blank Tape - 17 years agoThe last time I looked at HDV footage on a DV deck I could see an image; it was distorted somehow or maybe running at a weird speed, don't recall exactly. But I'm pretty sure the sound was messed up or non-existent. Bottom line, if there was footage on the tape you would see something. JKby John K - Café LA DPBuzz Tip: Quick and Dirty HD/HDV monitoring for $19! - 17 years agoI know ALL of you are reading your Digital Production Buzz newsletter, but in case you missed the last one here's a great tip.
