Re: Reinstalling FCP 4 - 17 years ago> Do Tiger and FCP 5.1 Universal work well together? I can't speak to your install problem with 4.0, but I will say that Tiger+5.1 is the preferred setup. With a G5 I think you should really consider the upgrade to Tiger if you can afford it, otherwise you'll have to try and get 4.5 running under Panther. What version of Quicktime do you have installed?by John K - Café LA Re: DSR11 acting up - 17 years agoWhoa dude, no one's saying all DSRs suck. If you have the $$ you're better off with a deck, trust me. For the record, I've had my DSR-11 for 3 years now and no problems with it (knocks on desk). I agree that's it not the most robust unit, but the mechanism has held up much better than the mini-DV cam that I ran into the ground as a log and capture device...by John K - Café LA Re: Mac Pro is Bad News For Cafe LA - 17 years agoJoe, did you ever get the S-Video port to work? And yes, the apps seem to be behaving themselves. Question: Do you need all of the discs to upgrade 5.0.4 > 5.1? It seems like it wants to reinstall all of the content for Motion, LT and SPro which seems like a waste of time if you're not on an Intel Mac. Wouldn't all these files be the same? Do you just upgrade the apps? And Loren -- thank you for the rant. Iby John K - Café LA Will FCP 5.1 still work with non-U apps? - 17 years agoThis is why waiting too long to upgrade can bite you in the butt... Picked up a project file from a client today and forgot to ask if it was made in v5.1; of course it was and now I can't open it here. He's letting me borrow his 5.1 upgrade disc (easier than making an EDL) but it's ONLY the FCP disc, not the rest of the suite. They tend to look bad on a computer monitor, especially in DV. The built-in text generators (including Boris) are fine, but some of us prefer more control over fonts and text effects like glows and drop shadows in which case Photoshop is the way to go. Those format settings kind of depend on what font you use at what size, so try different oby John K - Café LA Cool QT embed web helper app - 17 years agoSo after pulling my hair out trying to properly embed Quicktime files in web pages, I stumbled across this neat little helper app: PAGEot You open up your QT file and select all the options you want (size, controller, autoplay, target QT player, etc.) and then it generates the proper code to paste into your HTML doc. JKby John K - Café LA Re: Getting HDV to letterboxed SD - 17 years agoJust remember to work in 16:9 dimensions (if that's what your aspect ratio is). Pick the pixel height you want, divide by 9 and multiply that by 16 to get the width. A standard 4:3 ratio (like 640x480) will put the unwanted squeeze on it.by John K - Café LA Re: **The Great Internerd running summary** - 17 years ago> >There already is but no one reads it. > > Anyone wanna lay odds on that's what will happen with 95% of > posters with the FAQ? And they specifically requested the same format as the Apple HD trailers at the same sizes so I can't change those specs. I am, however, going to offer smaller non-HD downloads, probably as Mpeg-4s which should work for any stray Windows users who are still on QT6. This time can be reprogrammed in the Terminal fairly easily, or you can use one of the programs mentioned to do it manually (I prefer Cocktail). You can capture from a regular DV deck normally. If you shoot 24p advanced you'll need the capture preset to remove pulldown, but again you don't need the camera to capture the footage correctly; it functions like any other DV footage. It's not what I would charge to edit a small feature or a show for a TV network, but for most smaller jobs at a lower experience level it's a place to start. I certainly wouldn't accept anything LESS than that. JKby John K - Café LA Re: .mov won't play video - 18 years agoA lot of files out there have uncommon codecs that Quicktime attempts to open but can't play back. Double-check that your audio was recorded at 16-bit 48kHz; FCP will give you that warning when the audio rates of your footage and capture settings don't match. Most cameras have the option to record 12-bit, 32kHz audio (which you should NEVER use unless you need 4-channel audio) and even some other weird sample rates.
