As well as being amazed and sitting and listening to Dan DiPola postulate about our impending HD future...now if i could just figure out how to win the raffleby Scott Erickson - Café LA Re: HDV...should I? - 16 years agoIm on the verge of going HDV as well and ive been looking really hard at the JVC HD-100...Ive used both Sony's HDV cams and they suck, terrible low light and really only a interlace signal. JVC has a real lens, no P2 issues, real 24p, and 720 looks a lot better to me. Plus if you want, you can get real 35mm lens on it. Its a real pro-sum cam and will integrate into a dv workflow a lot easier tby Scott Erickson - Café LA Re: managing HDV - 16 years agoShane- Do you think its better to uprez to DVCProHD from DV anamorphic or regular DV? I have some DV anamorphic footage shot in 24p that i'd like to scale up, my thought was the 16x9 of DV progressive would be better than cropping regular DV. Any thoughts? ***Nice tutorial by the way, thanks....***by Scott Erickson - Café LA Re: HDV Workflow issues... - 16 years agoThanks for the info, im going to shoot some test 1080i footage and see how it looks compared to HDV 720 and DVCproHD 720 as well as the conversion times, see which is best...by Scott Erickson - Café LA HDV Workflow issues... - 16 years agoOk i posted this somewhere else but it got buried and i have yet to get a good idea of how to tackle this... Potentially I have a shoot coming up for a band that i'd like to do in HDV, but it would involve mixing Sony's 1080i HDV and JVC's 720p HDV as there would be two cameras of each. My question is how to mix these two formats on one timeline? The best option i can think of is to get theby Scott Erickson - Café LA Re: Make dv look more like svhs - 16 years agowhy don't you dub the DV to SVHS and then dub back to DV, recapture, and presto, DV that looks like SVHSby Scott Erickson - Café LA Re: HDV Project - 16 years agoI'm going to kind of hijack this thread a little bit as ask about mixing HDV formats. Sony's HDV is 1080i and JVC's in 720p, what's the best way to go about combining the two in one timeline? Should i render Sony's down to 720p or should i render everything out to DVCPro HD? There would be four cameras and i'd like to multicam but not sure if i have the bandwidth to stream 4 DVCpro HD clips buby Scott Erickson - Café LA Unknown file type when saving? - 16 years agoLeft FCP on over night for a relatively long render, came in this morning did a few tests, footage looked good, etc ,etc but when i went to save, i get a little window that says unknown file type and i can;t do anything. Everything was on for a while so i know the project files got autosaved but whats going on? I just restarted the comp and the problem went away but my render files are gone.by Scott Erickson - Café LA Re: RotoScoping: Motion vs. After Effects - 16 years agoI think i found out what my issue was...I noticed that it only happened to certain points and that i had done something different to these points than the others... Later on in the sequence as the shapes changed drastically frame to frame, i got lazy and used the Cmd-Click-Drag function to just draw new bezier arms instread of dragging in the existing ones. This basically reset the prior armsby Scott Erickson - Motion RotoScoping: Motion vs. After Effects - 16 years agoOk, all prior rotoscoping ive done has been in AE, no complaints other than the time consumingness of it all. I love Motion and would rather do all my graphical work here for its interoperability w/ FCP but after several hours of rotoscoping, im not so happy with it. Using the Record animation feature, ive been doing some generic roto work but it seem that when i adjust the arms of my vectby Scott Erickson - Motion Re: OT - suggest an osX friendly printer that prints ON DVDs? - 16 years agoI have an R200 at home that wore out its disc carriage tray along with my patience so i just picked up a new replacement for it(R220), $20 more than the price of ink. It did last through lots of discs and the newer model seems more rugged on the disc tray aspect. The R800 i have at work is much faster and better but i believe is discontinued. As far as printing to edges, as crappy as the softwby Scott Erickson - Café LA HDV in DV Anamorphic... - 16 years agoI was given some HDV footage to add into a timeline that is completely DV Anamorphic. So i figured what the hell and just dropped it in and rendered it out but, while the quality looks good and the aspect ratio fits, the motion does not look right. The clip is literaly 5 secs and was given to me already captured as HDV by another editor, is there a way to make the motion look right without haby Scott Erickson - Café LA Re: Project Files - How big is too big? - 16 years agoOK well ive had some issues before with project files getting all weird at only 20meg or so, working with lots and lots of Motion projects specifically, and that seemed to slow everything down. . THe source project is pretty big but since i don;t deal with that much anymore i;ve let it go. Anyway, i decided to chop this project a little bit early and just wanted to hear others experiences. Good tby Scott Erickson - Café LA Project Files - How big is too big? - 16 years agoI was just wondering how big everyone lets there project files get? I've started subdividing my project because its taking awhile for them to load, it was getting over 10meg, now in two 5 Mb files, both regularly backed up off drive. I will recombine only the necessary sequences when i'm done and finesse from there. Any thoughts, suggestions, recommendations?? also, i just discoved opt-v pby Scott Erickson - Café LA Re: 16:9 in iDVD 6 - 16 years agoI've actually run into this problem as well, here is my expereience with it. iDVD6 does not recognize anamorphic as 16x9. You can do all the correct settings and it will still display the video as 4:3. If you give it video in a 16x9 format, i.e HDV, it shows up as 16x9 on your preview. However, the anamorphic pixel aspect ratio does come across on the dvd so if you watch it on a 16x9 tv, it shby Scott Erickson - Café LA Re: Fuji Dynamics... - 16 years agoI know i said i was done with this thread but perhaps maybe you would want to hire me to shoot your commercials??? hahah, just had to throw it out there....by Scott Erickson - Show and Tell Re: Fuji Dynamics... - 16 years agoOK, This is the end of it for me... Criticism is fine and thats what i wanted, what did other editors think of my editing? does it flow, are the shots halfway decent, etc? something actually constructive other than saying it sucks balls and snide comments. i don;t think Koz liked it either but at least he tried... Focuses on the the owner of Fuji Dynamics, the owner of the shop that built the 800hp Nissan Skyline the movie focuses on. I took a little extra time with this clip as im still laying out all the rest of the footage but i think it looks pretty good for an impromptu shoot at his garage with a dvx and a trv... =S= Fuji Dynamicsby Scott Erickson - Show and Tell Re: Mulitple Images as One Particle System??? - 16 years agowow, the new forums sure have messed everything up i guess. Anyway, to summarize...Adolfo really helped me out but suggesting using Automater to sequentialize(is that a word) all the pics and use them as a image sequence with a non-animating random start frame particle system. Now, here's my new addition, is there any random seed number that is actually sequential? or does that defeat theby Scott Erickson - Motion Mulitple Images as One Particle System??? - 16 years agoI have a wealth of images that i would like to use in a particle type way. I'm hoping there's a way to set the source of the particles to be a folder rather than a file??? and it would choose those progressively??? I'm not sure this is possible but it'd be a huge time saver. Also, i tried to manually create the particle look but ran into other frustrations. Mainly, i can;t create the naturalnesby Scott Erickson - Motion Re: Rounding Off - 16 years agowell yes it does take the percentage into consideration but when i move off that text object or click on another one, it reverts to the old setting. Very frustrating and probably my biggest compaint with Motion. I really wish they would get their tracking values in line with rest of the graphic worldby Scott Erickson - Motion Rounding Off - 16 years agowhat's with certain numeric values rounding off to a major number when i know it goes in between during animation? two examples...tracking, i want my text to fit in a certain area so i use trackingto scale it down, however, if i say -.5 it jumps to -1 or just to 0. If i animate the tracking it obviously goes through these vales to get to 0 cleanly, why can't i have it stay there? also, the scaby Scott Erickson - Motion Re: Text on a path? - 16 years agoOne of the Livetype fonts, its a cop-out but very nice looking. Although its very hard to manipulate those fonts in Motion. Such as the font face color, It comes standard red but i can't change it under text options, only to black. The standard font was red so to get white i had to desaturate, then equalize, and then add bloom for the highlights. Is there a better way? Additionally, if i add drby Scott Erickson - Motion Re: Text on a path? - 16 years agothanks Mark, i found it on my own afterwards but i guess i deleted my post as you were responding. It took a bit to find that trick to get to the path editor. Here's my end result... Sometimes, it will eventually stop, other times i've had to forcequit and lose what i hadn't saved. It's very annoying, any ideas why or just a bug? Also, is there a way to copy-paste key frames likby Scott Erickson - Motion Re: What would you like in next version? - 16 years agoMaybe im missing this somewhere but a Paste Attributes feature(ala FCP) would be nice. Although i might just be missing it. Example, im using replicator to make a line of footprints, i made the left and i want the right to be exactly the same but i can;t replace the footage of a copied replicator using the right version of the footprint. The replace media feature won;t work for the replicator anby Scott Erickson - Motion Re: Pet Peeve with Transistions - 16 years agoKeeping the transition would be fantastic but derek's right, im just asking for the video clips to have priority over transitions. If a clip i move overwrites past of that transition, i want the transition to be changed/deleted and not prevented from completing the action. If the transition adapted itself, that would be even better...by Scott Erickson - Café LA Pet Peeve with Transistions - 16 years agoThis is something ive never figured out with FCP, why is there sooo much importance placed on transitions. So much to point that it restrains actions i'd like to do just to save the integrity of a transition. I can understand maybe a warning message but if im deliberately making an action, copy/pasting clips, moving clips, etc, that involve deleting or modifying a transistion, i can't.
